What goes into your trading cost

Brokerage is only one slice of what a trade costs. The statutory charges — the same for every broker — are:

  • STT — 0.1% both sides on equity delivery, 0.025% on the intraday sell, 0.02% on the futures sell, 0.1% on the options sell (premium).
  • Exchange transaction charges — a small percentage of turnover, higher on options.
  • GST — 18% on brokerage + transaction + SEBI charges.
  • SEBI turnover fee and stamp duty (on the buy side).

Net P&L is your gross profit (sell value − buy value) minus the total of all these charges. The breakeven move is how far price must travel just to cover costs.

How to use it

Pick your segment, enter buy/sell prices and quantity (for options, use the premium as the price and total contracts as quantity), and your broker's per-order brokerage (₹0 for most discount-broker delivery, ~₹20 for intraday and F&O). The breakdown updates instantly.

How brokerage is calculated in India

Brokerage in India falls into two models. Flat-fee brokers — Zerodha, Groww, Upstox and similar discount brokers — charge a fixed rupee amount per executed order, not a percentage of trade value. Equity delivery is typically free (Rs.0), while intraday, futures and options orders cost around Rs.20 per order. Traditional full-service brokers charge a percentage of turnover: typically 0.3%–0.5% for equity delivery and 0.03%–0.05% for intraday. For F&O, most flat-fee brokers charge Rs.20 per executed order regardless of lot size — a 1-lot Nifty trade and a 50-lot trade cost the same brokerage. For options traders evaluating position sizing and risk, the option Greeks calculator helps assess how Delta, Theta and Vega affect a position's value independently of transaction costs. Other charges beyond brokerage

Brokerage is the negotiable part. The statutory charges below are set by regulators and are identical across all brokers:

  • STT (Securities Transaction Tax) — 0.1% on equity delivery (both buy and sell), 0.025% on intraday sell only, 0.02% on futures sell, 0.1% on options sell (on premium value).
  • Exchange transaction charges — NSE levies approximately 0.00297% for equity; options attract higher charges (~0.035% of premium turnover on NSE). BSE rates differ slightly.
  • GST — 18% applied on brokerage + exchange transaction charges + SEBI charges combined.
  • SEBI charges — Rs.10 per crore of turnover (0.000001 of turnover), applicable to all segments.
  • Stamp duty — charged on the buy side only; rates are state-specific and range from 0.003% to 0.015% depending on segment.

How to reduce brokerage costs

  • Use a flat-fee broker for active intraday or F&O trading — percentage-based brokerage compounds rapidly at higher trade values.
  • For long-term equity investing, use delivery (zero brokerage at most discount brokers); statutory charges still apply but brokerage itself is eliminated.
  • Avoid over-trading — each leg (buy and each sell) is a separate order that attracts full brokerage. A round trip costs two orders.
  • For options, brokerage is per executed order regardless of the number of lots. Batching multiple lots into one order saves on brokerage compared to placing them separately.

Using the TradePulse brokerage calculator

Select your segment from the dropdown (Equity Delivery, Equity Intraday, Futures or Options). Enter your buy price, sell price and quantity — for options, use the premium as the price and enter total quantity as lots multiplied by lot size. Set your broker's per-order brokerage (leave at Rs.0 for delivery, Rs.20 for intraday or F&O with a flat-fee broker). The calculator instantly shows a full charge breakdown — brokerage, STT, exchange charges, GST, SEBI fees, stamp duty, total charges, net P&L and the breakeven move required to cover costs.
