How option profit is calculated
At expiry an option is worth only its intrinsic value. The profit on a position is that value minus what you paid (or plus what you received, if you sold):
- Long call: max(0, spot − strike) − premium · breakeven = strike + premium · loss capped at the premium, profit unlimited.
- Long put: max(0, strike − spot) − premium · breakeven = strike − premium · loss capped at the premium.
- Short call / put: you keep the premium but take on the buyer's payoff — capped profit, large (call: unlimited) risk.
