What is the ROI formula?

ROI = (Amount returned − Amount invested) ÷ Amount invested × 100. It expresses the gain as a percentage of what you put in. Annualised ROI adjusts this for the holding period so investments of different lengths can be compared.

What is the difference between ROI and annualised ROI?

ROI is the total percentage gain regardless of time. Annualised ROI converts it to a per-year rate using (final ÷ initial)^(1/years) − 1, which is the same as CAGR and lets you compare a 1-year trade with a 5-year one fairly.

Reading your ROI

ROI = (Returned − Invested) ÷ Invested × 100. It's the simplest measure of how an investment did. But a 40% ROI means very different things over 1 year versus 5 — so for fair comparison, use the annualised ROI (the same as CAGR), which converts the total return into a per-year rate.
